Astronomy IN the Northwest highlands

Astronomy events, outreach, education, and dark sky advocacy in the Northwest of Scotland.

Celebrating the darkest skies in Britain and beyond

The Northwest Highlands has some of the darkest skies not just in Scotland, but also the whole UK and all of Europe. Learn more about how we’re working with the community to encourage astronomy appreciation and protection of our dark skies.

Join a free friendly community of stargazers here in Assynt. Our club hosts regular meet-ups, talks, and observing sessions where everyone is welcome — from complete beginners to seasoned astronomers. Together we explore the night sky, share knowledge, and celebrate the wonders of the cosmos.

As ambassadors of the North West Highlands Geopark, we are exploring the potential to achieve official International Dark Sky status for our region. This recognition will protect our skies from light pollution, celebrate their natural beauty, and place the Northwest Highlands firmly on the map as one of the darkest places in Europe to experience the stars.

From guided stargazing nights to hands-on telescope workshops, our events bring the universe closer to home. Whether it’s spotting planets, catching the northern lights, or exploring deep-sky objects, our events are designed to inspire wonder and share the magic of our dark skies with all ages.

Stoer Observatory

Stoer Observatory

Perched on the Stoer Peninsula in the heart of the North West Highlands Geopark, Stoer Observatory offers a unique window to the universe. Surrounded by some of the darkest skies in Europe, it provides an ideal base for stargazing, astrophotography, and exploring the wonders of the night sky.

Equipped with both digital imaging and observational telescopes, the observatory supports everything from casual stargazing to deep-sky imaging projects. For those who’d like to linger under the stars, our neighbouring holiday cottage offers comfortable accommodation — the perfect place to stay the night and make the most of your dark sky experience.
